New guidance helps secure high-quality SuDS from the start
We have released new guidance, Enabling development. Getting SuDS right from the start (C823F), to help developers, planners and landowners embed sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) at the earliest stages of development.
The publication aims to ensure that SuDS, which can reduce flood risk while also improving water quality, biodiversity and the character of places, are considered from the very beginning of the development process rather than as an afterthought at the planning stage.
Supported by an engaging animation, the guidance sets out clear principles and practical advice to help decision-makers integrate SuDS effectively into sites from land acquisition and allocation through to masterplanning.
Emma Cecil, Senior Civil Engineer at Arup and one of the guide’s authors, said the guide provides “targeted, simple support for those involved in the very early stages of site progression” and aims to show “how early consideration of sustainable drainage can maximise benefits and mitigate risks.”
Adrien Baudrimont, Senior Research Manager at CIRIA and project lead, described early consideration of SuDS as “a win-win for both land agents and masterplanners,” adding that the new resource “gives decision-makers a clear starting point when assessing a site.”
